About

Ahne Studio is an invitation to shape cities together.

We are an urban planning and community engagement practice working at the intersection of place-making, climate action, and equity. Rooted in participatory design, we co-create plans with the communities who are intended to be served by them.

We work with diverse communities on plans for heritage districts, downtowns, waterfronts, neighbourhoods, and entire towns, cities, and regions. Our project experience has taken us from small town main streets to major metropolitan centres, and from large scale policy plans to intimate community dialogues.

We see that cities hold beauty and promise. We believe a better world is within our reach, and that urbanism plays an important role in getting us there. We choose projects in which we can make a difference.

We are experts on cities. So are you. Let’s design them together.

About Our Name

Ahne is translated from German into English as the feminine version of ancestor.

We are committed to remembering from where we come.
We recognize that each of us carry a unique history and set of lived experiences that shape the way we see and interact with our cities (and the way they interact with us). We are a female owned and operated firm, and we bring a feminist lens to our practice. At the same time, we acknowledge that we – and many of the city builders with whom we work – carry unearned privilege. We believe this means that all planning and engagement processes ought to address issues of representation and power. We are students of urbanism, learning from others and continually evolving our understanding of what constitutes successful city building.

We are committed to remembering that we work on someone else’s ancestorial lands.
Our shared work takes place on Indigenous lands, including Treaty and unceded lands. We know that we must move beyond positive intent. We must also have positive impact. We are committed to decolonization, and to being guided by Indigenous voices in understanding what this means for each project.

We are committed to being good ancestors.
We believe that every city building project must tackle the climate emergency head on. There is no time for half measures. In our practice, we are committed to generational equity. We honour the future of our children and grandchildren, and the generations after them.
