The Town of Maple Creek set out to create two separate but integrated planning processes: a Cultural Plan to strengthen arts and culture; and a Main Street Implementation that provides direction for revitalizating the downtown heritage district. In this ranching community of 2200 people in Southwest Saskatchewan, the Plans combine design, culture, tourism, economic and community development, and heritage conservation.

The plans were created through community input from the Nekaneet Pow Wow Regalia Group, Cypress Hills Metis Métis Cultural Centre, Southwest Saskatchewan Oldtimers’ Museum, Maple Creek Composite High School, Seniors Centre, Royal Canadian Legion, business owners, arts and heritage organizations, and the general public.

Since adoption, the Town has been successful in leveraging the Plans for implementation funding.
