One of Vancouver’s most densely populated downtown neighbourhoods was in need of green space. The Vancouver Board of Park and Recreation launched an engagement process to seek community input on needs and aspirations for a new park that would be created in place of a surface parking lot not far from Vancouver’s Central Library.
The outcome was a design that is unlike any other park in the city. It creates diverse experiences that range from a small cafe kiosk to a destination play area. A universally accessible elevated walkway with netted hammocks provides views and informal hangout spots. It also includes space for interactive installations that can be suspended from the underside of the structure.
The community engagement process was both online and in-person, and included an outdoor Public Ideas Fair that featured an interactive “design the park” sandbox, visioning chalkboard, and more.
